USCIS DNA Testing Approved Services

What is a USCIS DNA Test?

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing may be suggested by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) when an immigrant visa applicant submits a petition or application with insufficient primary evidence to establish a claimed biological relationship.

Please note that when USCIS suggests relationship DNA testing, it is voluntary, not mandatory. However, if DNA testing is chosen, the test must be performed by a laboratory that is AABB accredited (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks). Only results from accredited laboratories such as our partner laboratory are recognized by USCIS for secondary evidence submission.

What is required for USCIS DNA Testing?

To properly begin the DNA testing process, you must receive an official Request for Evidence (RFE) or written notice from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)โ€”or, in applicable cases, a U.S. Department of State Passport Agency or U.S. embassy or consulateโ€”requesting additional evidence to establish a claimed biological relationship.

Please note: We do not recommend completing a DNA test for immigration or passport purposes before receiving an official request. Preemptive DNA testing does not meet USCIS or Department of State chain-of-custody requirements and may result in the need for repeat testing or potential delays or denial of your case.

Can I use home test kits for passport DNA testing?

No. Home DNA test kits cannot be used for passport DNA testing purposes. Passport agencies require that any DNA testing be conducted by an accredited laboratory.

Please note, Home DNA kits do not meet this requirement because they do not establish a legal chain of custody, which is necessary to ensure compliance for DNA test results for immigration evidence submission purposes.

Additionally, DNA testing for passport or CRBA cases is only performed after it has been requested by a U.S. Passport Agency or a U.S. embassy or consulate. Individuals cannot initiate the DNA testing process independently or submit results from home DNA kits for government review.

Do I need a lawyer for help with USCIS DNA testing?

No. It is not a requirement for you to acquire a lawyer to schedule DNA test for passport evidence submission purposes. Lawyers are commonly used to assist immigrant applicants with their filing process.

Can DNA test results be submitted preemptively without waiting for a U.S. passport agency to suggest them?

No, DNA results should not be submitted preemptively without waiting for the U.S. passport agency to suggest them. DNA testing is entirely voluntary and should only be pursued if suggested by the passport agency when other forms of evidence are insufficient to establish entitlement to a U.S. passport.
